Desktop Hardness Tester calibration is the process of verifying and adjusting the accuracy of hardness measurements by comparing the machine's results against certified reference standards.
Hardness testing measures a material's resistance to indentation. Rockwell testing evaluates indentation depth, while Vickers and Brinell testing evaluate indentation size, diagonal or diameter.
Calibration verifies the test force, indenter performance and measurement system, supporting reliable material verification, consistent quality control and compliance with applicable ASTM and ISO standards.
Method of Desktop Hardness Tester Calibration
The calibration process follows recognised practices such as ASTM E18, ASTM E10, ASTM E92 and ISO 6506, ISO 6507 and ISO 6508 , using direct and indirect verification methods where applicable.
1 Machine Setup and Inspection
Ensure the machine is stable, level and protected from excessive vibration.
Check the alignment of the indenter and anvil.
Confirm that the machine setup is suitable, as misalignment can significantly affect the test results.
2 Indenter and System Verification
Inspect the condition of the diamond or ball indenter.
Check for wear, contamination or damage that could affect penetration accuracy.
3 Test Force Verification
Verify the applied loads, including minor and major forces, using certified reference equipment.
Confirm correct force application and dwell time.
4 Reference Block Testing
Perform hardness tests using certified hardness reference blocks.
Compare the measured readings with the certified reference values.
Take multiple readings to evaluate consistency and machine performance.
5 Measurement System Verification
Rockwell: Verify the indentation-depth measurement system.
Vickers and Brinell: Verify the optical measurement system used to measure indentation size.
6 Repeatability and Accuracy Check
Conduct multiple tests using the same certified reference block.
Confirm that the measurement deviation remains within the applicable tolerance limits.
7 Error Adjustment and Compensation
Adjust the machine settings or apply suitable correction factors where necessary.
Replace worn or defective components when required.
8 Certification and Reporting
Issue a calibration certificate containing traceable measurement results.
Include “as found” and “as left” data where applicable to support audit and quality-system requirements.
