What Is Contour Machine Calibration?

Contour Machine calibration is the process of verifying and adjusting the accuracy of profile and contour measurements taken from a component's surface.

Contour machines are used to measure complex shapes, step heights, radii, angles and other geometric features by tracing the surface with a precision stylus.

Calibration helps ensure that the captured contour data accurately represents the component's actual geometry, supporting precise dimensional analysis, product quality and compliance with applicable ISO and JIS requirements.

Method of Contour Machine Calibration

The calibration process uses certified contour artefacts and reference standards to verify the machine's dimensional and profile-measurement performance.

1 System Inspection and Setup

Check the condition of the stylus, probe arm and drive unit.
Ensure stable mounting, correct levelling and proper system alignment.
Verify the system settings, measurement range and applicable evaluation parameters.

2 Reference Artefact Verification

Use certified contour standards such as step-height, radius and angle artefacts.
Confirm that the reference artefacts have valid traceability to recognised measurement standards.

3 Linear Accuracy Check

Verify the accuracy of horizontal X-axis and vertical Z-axis movement.
Confirm precise displacement measurement throughout the applicable measuring range.

4 Profile Measurement Verification

Measure known contour features such as radii, angles and step heights.
Compare the measured results with the certified reference values.

5 Stylus Performance Check

Verify stylus force, tip condition and tracing consistency.
